The Mind Behind the Curtain
Hi! I’m Caren Scott, and I run CLS Editorial Services. I am a professional freelance editor, historian, researcher, and writer. I have been working in the field of editing for many years, and have experience working with a variety of different styles of writers. I’ve worked one-on-one with and prepared large-scale workshops for university students, coaching them on every aspect of the writing process, including, but not limited to: using proper grammar, sentence/paragraph structure, organization, pre-writing, research, outlining, formatting, citing sources, etc. I’ve edited and formatted dissertations and thesis proposals for graduate students and Ph.D. candidates. Most recently, I’ve had the pleasure of learning the finer details of the academic publishing business by providing editorial support for a forthcoming manuscript from a prominent historian.
Let’s Talk About Books
I am an avid reader in my free time and I’m a huge supporter of independent authors. My favorites genres to read for pleasure include romance, mystery, young adult, fantasy, and science fiction; however, I try to be open-minded to new reading experiences. I have editorial and administrative experience working with book blogs and author service providers to promote and publicize both independent and well-established authors. As such, I would love to work with authors who are in need of editorial or other author services.
A Quick Note on Editing
My corrections do not represent any failures on the author’s part! It is nearly impossible to edit your own writing and be objective, which is why it is so important to work with an editor. Your job as a writer is incredibly intimidating—you’re literally creating something out of nothing! I recognize that being a writer requires courage, fortitude, and a whole lot of creativity. So please do not consider any editing suggestions to be a criticism of your abilities. As the author, you retain the final judgement call on your writing project, and at the end of the day, my editing suggestions are yours to do with as you will with no judgement from me whatsoever.
The Business Side
I always like to be upfront with my clients by letting them in on my day-to-day work schedule. While I am primarily a freelance editor, I also run my own editing business which means that I am also the manager, IT person, long-term planner, networking coordinator, social media manager, janitor, accounts receivable, sales, business development, everything. For every two hours of editing I complete, I’m usually doing one hour of other work at a minimum. As such, I will always make it clear from the start that proper scheduling is a priority. With this in mind, please understand that I will never commit to a deadline that I cannot meet; however, if you have a sudden need to expedite your project so that it is completed earlier than the agreed upon completion date, please let me know ASAP. I will always do my best to accommodate expedited service requests.
